Tesla Withdraws Cybertruck From Australia and New Zealand Markets

The automaker is notifying reservation holders in those regions that their orders will be cancelled and deposits refunded.

Tesla has ended its plans to sell the Cybertruck in Australia and New Zealand, notifying customers in the region that their reservations will not be fulfilled.

The company confirmed the decision via email to deposit holders on October 23, 2026, stating that plans to produce the vehicle for those markets have been discontinued. The correspondence, which began circulating on social media and Reddit this morning, indicated that all associated payments would be refunded within 30 days. Tesla is additionally offering a complimentary one-year subscription to FSD (Supervised) to any reservation holder who elects to purchase a new Model 3 or Model Y instead.

The cancellations mark the conclusion of a lengthy wait for consumers in the region. Australians began placing deposits of A$150 in November 2019, resulting in an accumulation of funds over nearly seven years. Tesla had closed the Australian reservation page in May 2022, replacing it with an updates button, but did not refund deposits at that time. In 2024, Elon Musk had told shareholders that the company might be able to certify the truck for other markets sometime the following year.

Tesla's decision appears to stem from the vehicle's production specifications. The Cybertruck is currently manufactured solely in left-hand drive, whereas Australia and New Zealand require right-hand drive configurations. The company has not previously offered a right-hand-drive version of the model.

The potential market for the vehicle in the region was significant, with data from 2020 indicating Australia accounted for approximately three percent of global Cybertruck reservations. Tesla has not released specific regional figures. However, the company's recent delivery statistics suggest that the volume of sales for the model is insufficient to justify the engineering costs required for right-hand drive adaptation.

In the third quarter of 2026, Tesla delivered 8,295 units in the category comprising 'Other Models,' a group that now consists almost exclusively of Cybertruck inventory since the cessation of Model S and Model X production. This quarterly figure represents a production rate of approximately 30,000 vehicles annually, compared to a manufacturing line capacity of 250,000 units per year.

Tesla has restricted its international rollout of the Cybertruck to left-hand drive markets, including South Korea, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and Israel. The vehicle remains unavailable in the European Union due to pedestrian safety regulations.

Reservation holders seeking to maintain their deposit with the company must select a Model 3 or Model Y to receive the FSD (Supervised) subscription offer.
