Anthropic’s Imminent IPO Set to Create a New Tier of Ultra-Wealthy Backers

As the AI lab prepares for a public listing, early investors and late-stage funds are sitting on stakes worth billions, with some seeing returns that exceed ninety times their initial outlay.

Anthropic is on the verge of a historic public listing, a move expected to occur within this year at a valuation that could reach two trillion dollars. This event is poised to generate a massive windfall for the venture capital firms and individuals who backed the company during its early days. Even before the official stock debut, the stakes held by these key players are already valued in the billions, reflecting the rapid appreciation of the leading artificial intelligence laboratory.

The timeline of Anthropic’s growth illustrates the staggering speed at which the company’s value has escalated. In 2021, the startup was valued at just $461 million during its Series A round. By 2023, that figure had surged to $5 billion, and by the time of the most recent private market valuation, it stood at $965 billion. This trajectory has turned modest initial investments into portfolios worth billions of dollars.

Several high-profile figures and firms have reaped the rewards of this appreciation. Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, invested in the 2021 Series A. He currently holds approximately 1% of the company, a stake that is worth nearly $10 billion at the current private valuation. Similarly, Spark Capital, the only known venture firm with a board seat at Anthropic, invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C. That position has since ballooned more than ninetyfold to a value of $7 billion.

Other major players have also seen substantial gains. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested over $1 billion in the company over time. That cumulative stake is now valued at $14 billion. Iconiq, which wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was valued at $183 billion, now holds a position worth $17 billion. This late-stage bet has the potential to double in value once the IPO takes place.

Sequoia, a renowned venture capital firm, entered the picture earlier this year when Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. Their $3 billion investment secured them about 1% ownership, meaning they have already more than doubled their initial investment. Meanwhile, Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has poured a total of $435 million into the company, starting with a $35 million investment in the 2023 Series C. Although Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new firm, the original investment has grown into a stake worth billions.

Looking ahead, the primary focus for these investors is the timing and final valuation of the public offering. If the company achieves the anticipated $2 trillion valuation, the stakes held by these backers will see further significant increases. For early entrants like Schmidt and Spark Capital, the IPO will likely solidify their positions among the wealthiest figures in the tech sector. For later-stage investors like Iconiq and Sequoia, the listing represents a liquidity event that could cement their returns after a relatively short holding period.

The upcoming listing will not only mark a milestone for Anthropic but will also serve as a benchmark for the broader AI investment landscape. It demonstrates how quickly capital can appreciate in high-growth technology sectors. As the company moves toward the public markets, all eyes will be on whether the $2 trillion target is met, a figure that would make this one of the largest tech IPOs in history.
