Mbappe's Individual Record Sets Stage for Ballon d'Or Upset

Despite a trophyless season, Kylian Mbappe argues his historic World Cup scoring record is enough to win the top soccer prize.

Kylian Mbappe has positioned himself to win the Ballon d'Or this Monday in London. He is not the favorite according to bookmakers. He also did not win a major trophy this year. Yet he believes his individual performance is strong enough to secure the award. The prize carries no cash, but it significantly raises a player's market value and status.

The 2025-26 season ended without any silverware for Mbappe. Real Madrid and the French national team both failed to lift a cup. Instead, he points to a list of personal records. These achievements form the core of his campaign. He hopes they will finally bring him the honor he has chased for years.

His most powerful argument comes from the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe won the Golden Boot for the second tournament in a row. He also became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. He finished with 22 goals in 22 matches. Lionel Messi sits second with 21 goals. Miroslav Klose is third with 16. Mbappe said last month that overtaking all the great legends in the sport's most important tournament really stands out. When asked who he was voting for, he simply replied, "Myself."

His club form was equally impressive. Mbappe scored 25 goals to top the La Liga scoring charts. He also netted 15 goals in the Champions League. In that competition as well, he led the scoring. The former PSG forward noted that he was the top scorer in all the biggest competitions. He believes this makes it a good year for him. He says he really feels that momentum.

The main weakness in his bid is the lack of team success. Real Madrid had a turbulent campaign under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. The club finished second in La Liga. They lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This marked a second straight season without a major trophy for the Spanish giants. France also placed fourth at the World Cup. They lost to Spain in the semifinals and to England in the third-place playoff.

Rival contenders have stronger claims to the title. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain. He also won La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich collected three trophies last term. This includes the Bundesliga title. These players have the hardware that usually accompanies the award. Mbappe, however, appears unconcerned by their success.

Mbappe believes the award should go to a player, not a team. He told radio station RFI that they will not announce a team in the envelope. He added that individual performance and eye-catching moments are what stand out for this kind of award. His club manager, Jose Mourinho, has also backed him. Mourinho stated that everyone knows who made history this summer. He noted that the player is not from PSG or the Spanish national team.

History suggests the odds are against Mbappe. Over the past decade, every Ballon d'Or winner lifted at least one trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 prize after helping PSG win their first Champions League title. Rodri won Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City before winning two years ago. There is one precedent for a winner without a major trophy. Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid won in 2013. He ended Messi's four-year winning streak. Ronaldo scored 66 goals that season. Portugal failed to pass the World Cup playoffs, and Real finished as league runners-up. That result suggests Mbappe still has a slim chance. After nine nominations and a third-place finish in 2023, many believe his moment is long overdue.
