For fans of the Wisconsin women's tennis team, the recent Saturday doubleheader confirmed that the season is tracking toward historical significance. By sweeping both Bradley and Green Bay with identical 7-0 scores, the Badgers maintained their perfect 6-0 start. This performance marks the best beginning to a season for the program since 1992, signaling a level of dominance that has not been seen in decades.
The foundation for these victories was laid in the doubles events, where the Wisconsin squad established immediate control. Freshman MaryAnn Rompf and senior Kelsey Grambeau defeated Theresa Tebon and Tallie Piaskowski with a 6-1 score. Following that, sophomore Melissa Pick and freshman Lexi Keberle completed a clean sweep of the doubles round, winning 6-0 against Maria Neff and Samm Pedersen. This early success set a tone that persisted throughout the remainder of the matches.
In the singles competition, the Badgers demonstrated remarkable consistency, as no player dropped a single set. Lexi Keberle, competing at first singles, defeated Tebon 6-1 and 6-1. She now holds a combined record of 7-0 in both singles and doubles, reflecting her status as a reliable anchor for the team. Rompf also contributed significantly, taking the second singles match against Piaskowski with scores of 6-3 and 6-1.
The dominance continued down the lineup. Michelle Linden secured a victory at third singles against Sterre Tijssens, winning 6-1 and 6-0. Melissa Pick shut out Maria Neff with a double 6-0 score. At fifth singles, Christina Zordani defeated Pedersen 6-0 and 6-1, improving her personal singles record to 5-0 for the season. The Green Bay team faced additional challenges in the second match, fielding only five players due to being short-handed, which limited their ability to compete effectively against the Badgers' depth.
Head coach Kelcy McKenna attributed the team's success to internal factors rather than external circumstances. She emphasized that the players executed well in areas they could directly influence, specifically their attitude, effort, and energy. McKenna noted that these three elements are critical to the team's overall success and that maintaining this focus is essential for future performance.
Looking ahead, McKenna indicated that the team must continue to focus on the finer details of their preparation. She stressed the importance of managing day-to-day drills and match simulations to ensure the squad is ready for the upcoming National Indoors and the rest of the spring season. This disciplined approach to practice is viewed as the key to sustaining their current level of play.
Despite the perfect record, the coaching staff has identified specific areas for improvement, particularly in doubles mechanics. McKenna highlighted the need for better serves and returns, aiming to be the first team to adopt an aggressive posture. She also pointed out the importance of hitting specific spots on service plays to maintain tactical advantage.
The coach further emphasized the psychological aspect of transitioning from doubles to singles. She stated that the team must carry the momentum from a won doubles point into the singles matches, playing with grit and avoiding the giveaway of free points. This strategic continuity is seen as vital for protecting leads and closing out matches efficiently.
The Badgers will have their next opportunity to extend their unbeaten streak during the National Team Indoor Championship, scheduled for February 9 through 12. The team will host this event, providing a chance to test their recent form against a broader field of competition as they move deeper into the season.
